Sperm Bank

A sperm bank (also called a semen bank or cryobank) is a facility that collects, tests, freezes, and stores sperm donated by men, primarily for use in assisted reproduction such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

What Does a Sperm Bank Do?

1. Sperm Collection:
Men (donors) provide semen samples through masturbation in a private collection room.
The sample is typically collected into a sterile cup.

2. Screening & Testing Donors undergo:

  • Medical history check

  • Physical examination

  • Genetic screening for inherited diseases

  • Infectious disease testing (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B/C, STIs)

Processing & Freezing:

Semen is evaluated for sperm count, motility (movement), and morphology (shape).
It is then cryopreserved (frozen) using liquid nitrogen for long-term storage.

Storage:

Stored in liquid nitrogen tanks, often for years.

Can be used for:

  • Personal future use (e.g., before chemotherapy or surgery)

  • Anonymous donation for others to use

  • Directed donation (e.g., for a known recipient)

Usage:

Used in fertility treatments for individuals or couples (heterosexual, LGBTQ+, or single parents) who need donor sperm to conceive.
